In a recent discussion with an HR Director, we explored the top mistakes candidates make during interviews. He shared this valuable insight:

This single moment can be a lost opportunity. Instead of impressing the interviewer, many job seekers fail to show genuine curiosity about the role or company.

When asked, “Do you have any questions?” candidates have the chance to:

  • Gain in-depth insight about the role
  • Understand the company culture
  • Assess whether the manager and environment are right for them

In today’s workplace—where many employers are understaffed and some cultures are toxic—it’s critical to know exactly what you’re stepping into.

Before accepting a job, make sure you understand:

  • Turnover: Are employees leaving because they are unhappy?
  • Responsibilities & Hours: What does a typical week look like?
  • Leadership: How long has the manager been in their role, and what is their leadership style?

These questions help you build a realistic picture of the role, the team, and the person you’ll report to.

When the interviewer asks if you have questions, never respond with “No.”
That answer shows a lack of preparation and curiosity, and it tells the employer you are not serious about the opportunity.

Also, avoid asking about salary, benefits, PTO, medical coverage, or retirement plans at this stage. Those details are best discussed after you’ve received an offer, when negotiation becomes appropriate.

One exception is sales positions. In most cases, employers will explain upfront how compensation works, including base salary and commission or bonus structures. This is essential information to know whether the role aligns with your expectations.

The “Do you have any questions?” part of the interview is your chance to shine. Use it to uncover the truth about the role, the company, and your potential manager. Asking smart, focused questions can set you apart from other candidates and help you make the right career decision
